スピーチコンテスト2020 グランプリWhat Is Populism?(高2)

update : 2020.05.14

In recent years populism wins power all over the world. Populism is the political program or movement that revolves around a charismatic leader who appeals to and claims to represent the true interest of the ordinary people to win his own popularity and power. The good example is the Donald Trump’s promise of building the US-Mexico border wall. He insisted the issue of illegal crossings on the southern border as if it’s been a national emergency. The populist leaders represent themselves as the voice of people and appeal to fear, not facts. They see things in black and white and they usually deny the opponents views. As a result, society is separated into two groups, supporters and opponents. The two deeply opposed each other, so hatred is born within a country even when the country needs to be unified. I think the rise of populism will cause more serious problems from now on, so what can we do? It’s difficult to bridge the gap between them, but we need to carry out productive discussions as much as we can to solve the problems. It’s necessary to see things from a different perspective. Moreover, it’s important to be more concerned about politics for young people like us. Thank you for listening.
